The Avenue Community Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity Inc. is a Non-Profit, Charitable organization that provides services in Saskatoon and throughout the province. The Avenue Community Centre addresses the mental, emotional, physical and social health needs of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, two spirit, questioning, (queer) people by addressing the impact of homo/bi/transphobia, discrimination and heterosexism on their lives.  We are building community by developing and sustaining a dialogue with the people in our community and in the community at large.  We do this through learning, educating, listening, supporting and being champions of social justice with the belief that we can make and affect change.

THE POSITION

The Summer Events Co-ordinator is responsible for planning, co-ordinating and evaluating community events including: “Welcome to the Gaybourhood”, AIDS Walk For Life and others.  Will supervise our Drop-In Centre and other duties as assigned. Job Description Term: This is a Temporary Fulltime position at 35 hours per week. Will commence no later than June 3^rd, ending August 30, 2013.

Education: The incumbent must have completed at least one year of post-secondary school and intends to return to school in the fall. Knowledge of queer issues is essential. Experience working for community-based organizations &/or working in the queer community an asset.

Qualifications: First Nations, Metis, or Two Spirit people are encouraged to apply.

Thirza Jean Cuthand was born in Saskatchewan and grew up in Saskatoon. Since 1995 she has been making short experimental narrative videos and films about sexuality, madness, youth, love, and race, which have screened in festivals internationally, including Tribeca Film Festival, Mix Brasil Festival of Sexual Diversity, Hot Docs, Imaginenative, Frameline, Out On Screen, and Oberhausen International Short Film Festival where her short Helpless Maiden Makes an ‘I” Statement won honourable mention. Her work has also screened at galleries including the Mendel, The National Gallery, and Urban Shaman. She has also written a feature screenplay and sometimes does performance art if she is in the mood. She is of Plains Cree and Scots descent and currently resides in Saskatoon.

THE POSITIONS

MARKETING / EVENTS MANAGER

They are responsible for “front-end” activities and services. They organize events with staff, volunteers and agency partners. They are to continually assess the needs of the community and participate in the planning of programs & services. They are responsible for special events and projects conducted by the organization.

Term: This is a Full-time Temporary (1 year) position at 35 hours per week.

Education: A relevant under graduate degree with a minimum of 3 years of experience, or a combination of relevant education and years of experience. Knowledge of queer issues is essential. Experience working for community-based organizations &/or working in the queer community an asset.

ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

The Administrative Assistant is responsible for responsible for reception duties and for providing administrative support. They perform a variety of clerical functions.

Term: This is a Fulltime Permanent position at 35 hours per week.

Education: The incumbent requires one year post-secondary office administration certificate (or equivalent) and one year of experience including telephone reception. Knowledge of queer issues is essential. Experience working for community-based organizations &/or working in the queer community an asset.

The awards will be presented at a reception Friday, June 7th at the Albert Community Centre. The event is at 7pm and is completely FREE.

Come join us as we again recognize those who have made a significant contribution to the growth and development of a strong, vibrant and healthy Gender & Sexually Diverse (GSD) community in Saskatoon and area. We would like to thank Affinity Credit Union for their continued support of these awards, which has allowed us to provide recipients with a beautiful piece of locally crafted artwork. Award recipients are nominated by the community (YOU!) and selected by a volunteer committee.

The following awards will be presented:

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

The selection committee will consider people who have shown a demonstrated dedication to service and activities that have had a significant impact on the Saskatoon and area GSD community. Nomination criteria may include dedicated service, leadership, volunteerism, activism, development, and/or research.

YOUTH AWARD (Community Service Award)

This award is open to anyone between the ages of 13-25 years. Nomination criteria may include dedicated service, leadership, volunteerism, activism, development, and/or research that has benefited the Saskatoon and Area GSD community.

SPECIAL MERIT AWARD

This award is open to an individual, organization or business, within or outside of the GSD community who have made significant contributions to the GSD community. Nomination criteria may include community support, activism, leadership and a general openness, understanding and support of GSD issues.

• Staff and board members of the ACC are not eligible for awards.
• A separate nomination form must be used for each nomination.
• All nominations require two signatures.
• The number of awards given is determined by the committee on a year to year basis

Proceeds will go towards purchasing NEW Books & DVDs for our library.

People of all genders and sizes are encouraged to take as much or as little as they would like.

We will be accepting donations (clean, gently worn items only) beginning Monday, April 29th. We are especially on the look out for larger/taller sized women’s clothing and shoes in addition to men’s clothing, as well as gender neutral clothing.

If you are interested in acquiring cross gender clothing, but intimidated by a store setting, this is your opportunity!

The Tournament will start at 9pm and we will have staggered start times for teams of 4. This will be a 19+ event as the venue will be fully licensed. So come have a drink, play a round of glow-in-the-dark mini golf, have a chance to win some fantastic prizes at the same time Supporting the Saskatoon Diversity Network and the Avenue Community Centre.

Pink Prom is a part of the Pink Revolution week for anti-bullying. It is a chance for youth to dance and have fun in a place where they are safe to be themselves without discrimination of any kind. The theme for the night is Grease Lightning 50′s sock hop and we encourage 50′s style costumes!

The Prom will be hosted by some of our favourite drag queens, Kiki Roquette and Puffy Von Pop-n-Fresh! Plus we will have Pizza, Door Prizes, Contests, and Free Limo Rides all included for $5!

Come join us for a great night with fantastic people where queer youth and their allies can dance, with the date of their choice, without fear of social stigma or judgement.

Jon Cornish is Coming to Breaking the Silence Conference.

 We are proud to welcome Jon Cornish as our special guest on Friday evening, March 22 at 7:30. Jon is the superb running back for the Calgary Stampeders who was chosen this year as the CFL’s most outstanding Canadian player. He has entitled his talk “This Is My Story” and he does have a story! This is your invitation to join us at the Broadway Theatre for an extraordinary evening. Our university president, Dr. Ilene Busch-Vishniac, will welcome Jon and bring greetings from the university to the longest-standing conference of its kind in Canada. The full conference consisting of panels, workshops, and films continues the next day on campus.

If not now, then when? We believe that this is the right time for us to break the silence on these issues in our worlds of sport.

The ACC is excited to have Neil Balan from the Uof S and Sydney Bell from Sk Public Health join us for this special two part gender in representation in media exploration!!

March 6^th, at 4:45pm the RC youth group will host a screening of Tough Guise: Violence, Media & the Crisis in Masculinity.

Special Guest: Neil Balan from the University of Saskatchewan will be facilitating the post screening discussion!

About Film:
